5.   APIS Database Structure
          Path: Digital Library Projects  :  APIS  :   Overview

The APIS Database resides within the Columbia University 'Master Metadata File,'  an SQL application under IBM's DB2 software.    Only minor changes to the existing database schema were required to support APIS data.  These changes included, for example:

  • implementing 'glob' functionality to accommodate translations and other long fields;
  • the addition of a generalized capacity to support new notes fields;
  • defining an additional record ID element (cu001) to allow for normalized searching and matching;
  • implementation of a convention for BCE dates;

The following charts illustrate key elements of the APIS Database Structure.

Full documentation on the Columbia Master Metadata File (MMF) project is available on the Columbia Libraries internal web site.  NB:  This documentation relates to the preliminary version of the MMF (1997-1999); a revised schema has now been implemented, although as of 3/2001 the APIS project has not yet been migrated to it
