| Note: Catalogers
will continue to follow national guidelines and accepted practice
for recording alternate titles
in fields
246 and 247.
The guidelines below address only our local, Columbia practice
in assigning first indicators in those fields when cataloging electronic
resources.
The general principle to be applied is that
an alternate title that would be likely to sort next to or quite
near the corresponding
title
proper in the LWeb eresource listings
should
be coded
so that it will not generate an "added entry." (Such
alternate titles will however continue to be extracted and indexed
for online searching.) Significant variants that would be
likely to sort some distance away from the title proper should
be coded
with 246/247 first indicator
set to "1". The guidelines below serve
to illustrate the application of this principle; they are not intended
to cover all cases.
Note that selectors may sometimes request
that a commonly-used version of a title be coded to appear in the
LWEB listings even though the guidelines below would seem to
exclude it. In such cases, the variant title's first indicator
should
also be set to "1".
Guidelines
Set 246/247 First Indicator to "0" in any of the following
cases:
- the alternate title is identical to the title proper except
that it has the spelled out form of a symbol or abbreviation,
e.g.,
245 00 |a Accounting & tax |h [electronic resource].
246 0_ |a Accounting and tax
- the alternate title is identical to the title proper except
that it has different word spacing or boundaries, e.g.,
245 00 |a AgeLine |h [electronic resource].
246 0_ |a Age line
- the alternate title varies from the title proper only after
the first few significant letters or words, e.g.,
245 00 |a Biography and genealogy master index |h [electronic
resource].
246 03 |a Biography and genealogy master index online
- the variant appears only in the
HTML source code, e.g.,
245 10 |a Civil engineering database |h [electronic resource]
/ |c ASCE, American Society of Civil Engineers.
246 0_ |i HTML source code title: |a Search ASCE's civil engineering
database
- the variant is present only as an alternate spelling of another
variant, e.g.,
245 00 |a AccessScience @ McGraw-Hill |h [electronic
resource] : |b the online encyclopedia of science & technology.
246 10 |a Online encyclopedia of science & technology
246 0_ |a Online encyclopedia of science and
technology
