Luna/Saskia Testing Results

Outstanding Problems / Issues for further Investigation, 3/9/04

1) COLLECTION NAME: One remaining problem is with the repetition of the collection name as the first element in the metadata display. Are you certain nothing at all can be done about this? I can understand that the menu bar display is part of a different set of functions, but I have a hard time believing that the box labeled "Collection:" can't be suppressed. If it's not supressable, can it be moved to the very end of the list of metadata tags we display? If neither of these can be done, then that's that -- though I would really like a better sense of why this design choice was made.

2) REPOSITORY SPEED SEARCH (BROWSER INSIGHT/) In the Browser version, the SpeedSearch of "Repository" does not appear to function. (I haven't been able to get a session in the browser version to confirm this, but if that's true, clearly it needs to be fixed.)

3) ZOOM ISSUE: I've lost track of which images in the test system actually have sid/Zoom enabled at this point. People here keep reporting that zooming in too far results in an empty grey screen; but I'm assuming that's because the sid hasn't been loaded for that particular image. For the record, could you confirm this and also describe the behavior of the system when the sid is in fact loaded and the user has zoomed to the largest size and tries to zoom in still further? What displays and what message is generated for the user?

4) METADATA & SEARCHING ISSUES: I'm presuming that all the following relate to the metadata supplied by Saskia and would have to be addressed by updating the metadata locally and changing the indexing and display options as needed to accommodate the metadata change. I'm listing the following therefore both to confirm our understanding of the situation and to create for ourselves a list of changes we might want to make locally either as part of the training or while we have the system in test mode at Columbia.

a) Desired: Speed search on Repository Name only
Problem: Source metadata "Museum" field is provided by Saskia in the format: "Italy, Rome, Galleria Borghese". Since speed search is left-match, a search for Galleria Borghese will fail (although it can be retrieved by a data field search using "contains")
Remedy: Edit Repository fields such that the Museum Name is the first element and/or create separate fields for Museum Name, Museum Country, Museum City.

b) Desired: Speed search on Location (in Situ) by Country, State, City
Problem: Source metadata "Site" field includes only City or, for US locations, City + State
Remedy: Edit/Update "Location (In Situ)" fields to include Country + State + City and/or create separate fields for Location--Country, Location--City; populate the Country element manually.

c) Desired: Consistency in the presence of "View" element
Problem: Omitted & incorrect View information
Remedy: Fix manually

d) Desired: Consistent date searching across items
Problem: Non-date text in date fields (e.g., "ca. 1600) leads to incorrect or non-indexing of dates
Remedy: Create new normalized date field (e.g., "date_norm") and populate it with cleaned up numeric dates; use this field for indexing and speed searching
