Microforms Cataloging Manual

Cataloging Microform Guides

BACKGROUND

Guides to microform collections are cataloged in several different ways, depending on a number of factors. Use these procedures to catalog a guide that is not physically part of the microform set.

CATALOGED SEPARATELY OR TOGETHER?

It is generally preferable to catalog the microform collection and its guide on the same record, treating the guide as accompanying material. However, if the guide is issued by a different publisher, or at a different time, or has a significantly different title from the microform set, it should be cataloged on its own record (see AACR2 1.5E and its LCRI for further information). That said, if there is standard copy available it should be used, regardless of whether Columbia would have reached a different decision about cataloging the guide separately or together.

In case of doubt about whether to catalog a microform guide separately, consult supervisor. After the decision has been made, follow one of these two procedures to catalog the microform collection and its guide. Note: These procedures only discuss those aspects of cataloging that are unique to microform guides. All other standard procedures should be followed.
