That was the place to go. Lela and Ross were having supper when Hoover and Tolson walked in and were seated nearby. Ross, who was a devil, in a very loud voice, said to Lela, “What do you go out with that fellow Hoover for? He's just a flatfoot.” Hoover was getting redder and redder with anger because he could hear every word, as Ross intended him to. Finally, he couldn't stand it any longer, and he came over and shook a finger in Ross's face and said, “Ross, I just want to tell you this. If any member of your family ever gets kidnapped, I won't life a little finger.” Ross considered this a complete victory.

Q:

Yes. This is what he wanted...

When you returned from your honeymoon, where did you live?

Cerf:

I lived at that time in the Navarro, which is 112 East Fifty-Ninth Street. I had a beautiful bachelor apartment there.

Q:

This is the one that I saw a picture of in House and Garden in your scrapbook.

Cerf:

That's right. There we had four rooms, two overlooking the park. I took the place while they were building the Navarro and that apartment was modeled specially for me. There wasn't another like it in the building.

Q:

What did Phyllis think of moving into your bachelor quarters?
