Cerf:

Well, I hadn't learned yet how Phyllis operates. I was all right with her until she was able to take over. Phyllis is a very strong girl, and I love her for it.

Q:

Well, you need a strong person.

Cerf:

Yes, I do. And, as I say, I kiddingly named her, “The General” once. We've called her that ever since. In fact, now she's a four-star general. Frank Sinatra gave her a cap with “Boss” and five stars on it which she's sported ever since.

Well, Phyllis began meeting my friends and, as I say, they all loved her. In very short order, she had established herself. There was no period of adjustment necessary. A couple of arguments...because she said, “Every night I meet ten new people who are your best friends.” I had quite an assortment of friends! You know, I love people. Phyllis was bewildered at first by the number of people who seemed to be my intimate friends. The fact of the matter was that many of them I would only see once of twice a year, but they were still good friends. She soon picked and chose the ones that she wanted, and those, of course, are the ones that are our best friends to this very day.

Q:

Well, it shows the quality of sincerity, too.

Cerf:

Phyllis...I can't exaggerate what a wonderful girl she is. When I took her down to meet George Kaufman, I was terrified
