very near by and was working with Kaufman. Moss and Phyllis fell in love with each other at sight. This meant a lot to me because I adored Moss Hart. I can't tell you how deeply I loved Moss Hart. He has been dead now four years, and my eyes still get misty when I think of him. He was a wonderful friend.

Q:

He liked Phyllis. You realized that you began getting little signs that “this is the person.”

Cerf:

Oh, yes. My friends loved her at sight. They immediately said, “This is for you. You've found the girl.” There was never much question in my mind. It was inevitable.

Q:

When you came back to New York, your wife had stopped working. Is that correct?

Cerf:

Yes. For a little while she was busy meeting my friends and establishing herself, but this didn't last long. Phyllis is too active a woman.

Then Chris came very quickly. Chris was born about ten months after we were married. This meant we could no longer stay in the Navarro. Now, my father had lived with me in the Navarro. My mother had died years earlier. I think I told you all that.

Q:

Did he move out when you were married?
