Cerf:

He moved out before because at the Navarro Pop would always be around and once in awhile this proved extremely inconvenient. He would come marching in, sometimes at the most inappropriate moments. So I finally had to say, “Pop, I've got an apartment for you upstairs.” I couldn't stand having him go away. I adored him, but I just didn't want him quite that close! This didn't work out too well because he never gave me back the key and, although he had an apartment upstairs, he seemed always to be on deck, anyway. But, as I say, I loved him so; and most of the girls that I knew loved Pop, too, particularly Miriam Hopkins, who had him twisted around her little finger. He never liked Sylvia.

Q:

You said that, but he did like Phyllis.

Cerf:

Oh, Phyllis...yes.

Q:

When you lived there when you were first married, was he still upstairs?

Cerf:

Pop was living upstairs. Phyllis would often make breakfast for us, Pop and me; and Pop loved her right off the bat.

We were married in September; and in December, when it came time for Christmas--Pop and I had never had a tree or anything--Phyllis started the Christmas tree business. Once it started, I loved it. My father, always discreet and delicate, had under the tree a little cradle for Phyllis, a hint that
