Cerf:

This has nothing to do with my story. This has really nothing to do with my life. We've done a lot of books with the imprimatur of the Catholic Church. We've been very friendly with them, and they've been very pleased with a lot of the books that we've sponsored. They've even given us a few books to publish. It's been a very friendly, pleasant relationship. I don't know what's going to happen now because Spellman was my personal friend.

Q:

Well, nobody knows what's going to happen exactly.

Cerf:

We knew Bishop Sheen too, but not nearly as well.

There was a great story about Sheen. When Zeckendorff was buying real estate all over town, he was seen one day getting into an elevator with Sheen. Somebody said, “There goes St. Patrick's.”

But having the Church across the way has been very pleasant, and there's a view from my office of St. Patrick's from the back with Radio City standing beyond it which is a delight for photographers. For years we've had photographers coming up and begging to use my window to take their pictures. We've even used it for a catalogue cover for our new catalogue.

Q:

Do you think that you'll do a book on Cardinal Spellman?

Cerf:

No, I don't think so. He didn't interest me too
