had to buy a bond to meet them. In other words, we didn't have to sell the bonds, but in order to get a ticket to come into these meetings, they had to buy at least a $25 Victory Bond.
The first group that I went out with included Lillian Hellman and Robert Henriques, a very nice gentleman who had had a big seller at that time...and...
How did you get these people? They weren't all your authors.

Did you call up your friends or did the Government...?
We sat down. The head of this division was Julian Street, Jr., Pete Street, a very nice man. We worked out these things together.
Well, it was very successful.
It was tremendously successful.
The first group I shepherded was rather conventional, except that Lillian Hellman proved a little difficult. She would leave a pair of gloves or something behind every place and I'd have to run back and get them. She acted as though I was her errand boy and I didn't take to that too kindly.
