lady came from Cleveland, I'd mention three Cleveland bookstores while I was questioning. Of course, all you have to do is just mention the name of somebody on a program like that. It just tickles people to death. I'd get letters: “I heard you mention me the other night. That was very cute of you.” Also I'd get a letter from CBS: “We told you not to use these names.” But they began to realize that people liked it. Having lectured in many cities, when a contestant mentioned his home town, I'd know the name of the principal hotel there, or the name of the biggest factory.... I knew what products came from these cities and it always pleased the residents thereof when I listed them.

Also, it soon turned out that I was the only one who followed sports very closely. If they ever had a sports figure on, I had to be the one to guess his identity--a baseball player or a golf champion. We gradually got our specialties established. Dorothy Kilgallen knew every big jazz artist and all the swingers around town because she went to all of the nightclubs. That was part of her beat for her columning. Arlene knew everybody in the theater from the time of Noah so she was great at recognizing voices of the mystery guests.

When we got rid of Hal Block....

Q:

How did that occur?

Cerf:

They fired him. He had ignored one warning too many.
