Ours was a class program even though it was just a little game. Also, we spoke English, which is rather unusual on television.
When the program went off last year, CBS got bushels of protests from college students and teachers. I think that they were foolish to throw the program off. It wasn't in the top ten anymore because the young kids don't watch these game shows, but it had a special audience. I think that it will be revived some day. By that time we will be so old that they will have to wheel us out.
Who took over Block's place when he departed?
Somebody destined to hit the big time named Steve Allen.
How did they pick him?
He was doing just a local show at night, a predecessor of the “Tonight Show,” for Knickerbocker Beer...and he introduced a lot of other future stars like Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme. He was fine, but after a while he went to California to headline a big show of his own.
