playing down in Albany at some theater and none of us had seen it, so several of us decided to go down one afternoon to see it. Averell Harriman had a fit when he found out that we had gone in his official car. The governor's car was standing outside the theater where Baby Doll was playing! He worried that this might create a bad impression!

Q:

Did you know Jack Kennedy at all?

Cerf:

I met Kennedy at Marietta Tree's house one time when he was Senator. I remember this night because he was so attractive, but we never got to know each other well.

Q:

Did you ever think of approaching him for a book?

Cerf:

We didn't know him well enough.

For the Landmark Books we did do the PT-106 story. This was the first time that I ran across Bobby Kennedy. Bobby Kennedy had given some friend of his the right to write a story about the whole PT-106 incident. When he read that we were going to do this as a Landmark Book, he tried to persuade us to stop doing it because he said that he had promised this friend of his an “exclusive.”

What did he do, call you up or send his aide?

Cerf:

He called me from Washington. I remember hitting the
