Q:

Have they done that yet? Have they asked you to get anything yet?

Cerf:

They re not ready for it yet.

But our educational department is beginning to work together with Suppes. It's all beginning to mesh. This is something that is going to take several years. This is the future, but it's beginning. A great big new building has been opened in Palo Alto where we have men that we're all looking at--Random House; Suppes, who has his own department; and RCA. These things cost millions of dollars. No real publishing house can afford that, but RCA can. I don't know how many millions have gone into this thing already, to build these experimental machines and test out materials, but you see, we don't have to worry about that anymore. We've got this huge company behind us. If we were doing this ourselves, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night because of the colossal investment required.

This is the part of the business that interests RCA, and this is the part of the business that never interested me. I was interested in trade publishing. I was too old when the educational thing came along to really become involved in it. The fact of the matter is that, when RCA bought us, the thing that interested them most was the part of the business that interested me least. That was the Singer division up in Syracuse.

Q:

Well, you went into that a little bit in our last session.
