Cerf:

Let me just finish this. The case was appealed once, before the two Judge Hands and one other. That was the end of the case. They denied the appeal irrevocably so we published Ulysses with the Woolsey decision in it, and it still is in our edition of Ulysses. It has had an enormous sale. It's now one of the leading Modern Library Giants. It sells thousands of copies every year.

Now, there's one funny story connected with Ulysses after we published the Random House edition. This was our first really important trade publication. We had done Moby Dick, which was an enormous success, but that was a standard classic, done beautifully with Rockwell Kent illustrations. And we had already added O'Neill and Jeffers to our list. But here was a big commercial book--and front-page stories to help launch it.

Q:

And your name was in the paper for standing up for it, too.

Cerf:

You bet. Oh, this did a lot for Random House and did a lot for me personally. We got all we could out of it, I can assure you of that.

And here's a funny story connected with this. We had never been able to do much business with the American News Company. Macy's was our big customer for Modern Library, but for new books at that time the American News Company was the big customer. They had branches all over the country. They distributed all the magazines, and they also distributed books.
