By the way, my mother is dying.

Q:

I'm sorry to hear that.

Clark:

As I'm talking about this, I'm thinking about her, and the fact that she probably did this without even knowing. Maybe she did know what she was doing.

Q:

You mentioned earlier that there were problems with Mrs. Ascoli on the HARYOU Northside? board. Just what happened there?

Clark:

Would you excuse me a moment?.... You were asking me --

About Mrs. Ascoli.

Clark:

That was my wife on the phone, and I told her -- well, that was another example of the validity, the justification of some of my critics, only in this case, Mamie and I were directly involved together. We were sort of directly involved with the Adam Powell thing, too. This was a case in which a wealthy benefactor, and there was no question that Marian was a rather generous contributor to Northside Center, in the days in which we needed someone like her to give it some sort of financial validity and continuity. She was gracious. She was sensitive to the needs of children in that community. But there came a time when Marian believed and acted as if her generosity and her wealth should determine decisions.

So when that issue came up, you know, and she wanted this man, the psychiatrist who, we felt, was absolutely detrimental to
