to Farbstein: “Leonard, I'm not going to let you out-Jew me.” And that was the beginning of her change on that issue of jets for Israel. But in 1970 when she first ran in the club circuit to get the designation against Farbstein, she was specifically asked in three different places -- at the Village Independent Democrats and at two west side clubs -- what was her position on jets for Israel, and she said she was opposed to the sale of jets to Israel. And Jack Newfield wrote a letter ultimately in the Village Voice years later when he said he had lied when he said that it was an unfair attack on Bella, that she had never said she was against jets for Israel. He said in the letter to the Village Voice -- it's a famous letter now -- he heard her personally. Well, I know -- I heard her personally myself. But he said he heard her personally and then he intentionally, willfully lied and said she had never said it, which is a rather despicable thing to do for a reporter.
Yes. Let's identify Jack Newfield further. He's a political reporter.
Right -- works for the Village Voice and is an excellent reporter I must say. He's done an enormous amount of good in terms of muckraking, and that kind of reporting, but this is a failing on his part which I think he never will quite recover from. And I think he knows that. Okay.
