County politics, notwithstanding his defeat, since the removal of Eddie Costikyan. Eddie Costikyan was the one break in the regularity operations of Tammany Hall, and he was forced out; and then after him came J. Raymond Jones and then Frank Rossetti, and those are regulars. Jones is one of the worst.

In any event, not very long ago -- maybe three months ago, four months ago -- Frank Rossetti was here in my apartment; I called him. He was then under attack by the reformers. They wanted to defeat him and wage a campaign for county leader running Marty Begun, who's another friend of mine, who I don't find particularly able, very decent, very nice but not able, not a stand-up guy, not someone who really knows what he is doing in my judgment, and they wanted to run him. What we're doing now...” They were running against Frank Rossetti for district leader. In order to be the candidate, you have to be district leader. And he said, “We've got him on the ropes. With Nardelli who is now a judge but at that time was seeking the district leadership running against Rossetti, we're going to win, and we need you. We've just got a week left, and if we can just get you to come out against Rossetti, we'll have it. It's in the bag.”

Well, I wanted to help Marty, and I didn't have any special relationship with Rossetti. We always were nice to one another,
