Washington Square West, and I call 911, and I say, “This is Congressman Koch, and I am standing at the corner of Washington Place and Washington Square West, and I am at this very moment observing a woman in a turban, a black lady, in rather distinctive clothing, who is saying: ‘Loose bags and joints,’ and she is obviously selling dope. Don't you think you might send somebody over, maybe an undercover person, and do a little arresting?”

So he said, “Just a moment,” and he's evidently trying to locate the address, and he comes back and says, “There is no such corner.” (laughs) So I said, “Listen, I am not only standing at the corner of Washington Place and Washington Square West, I am looking at a street sign that says Washington Place-Washington Square West.” “Just a moment.” I don't know whether in my head I could hear the machines whirring. “Oh, yes, we have found it. we'll take care of it.”

So I wait 15 or 20 minutes, nobody comes, and then I take off. I mean there's a limit to how much time I can spend on this shit.

So in any event that was one incident, and I write a letter to Captain Fortune, and I say, “I'm just really angry that this can go on, that this can go on. It's driving the decent people out of the park. You've got to do something.”

The letter goes unanswered. Then on Thanksgiving Day, I'm walking through Washington Square Park. Did I tell you this
