pleasure, I went to Chavez to tell him this. I wrote the figures for each Institute down and Chavez said he would propose the 70 million for the five Institutes, including about half of the additional money for construction.

I then saw Senators Hill, Magnusson and Robertson and gave them the figures that had been agreed on and they said they would support them in full committee.

Rosemary McMahon gave the figures to Clinton Anderson, who was supposed to see other members of the full committee.

We feared opposition from Dirksen and Dworshak of Idaho. Florence tried to work on Dworshak and on his executive assistant and was certainly successful in at least neutralizing him.

Anna and I saw Ferguson in of? Michigan and urged him not to propose a general out, and if he did, to except the Public Health Service's Institutes of Health, to which he agreed. Actually, this was a futility, as I am sure he would never propose a cut in a Republican budget, in any case. However, we did see him and he did not appear hostile, although he had in '49.

Mrs. Lasker, in making these requests to the various Senators, did you have to furnish them with data to substantiate your arguments?
