Lasker:

Yes, I think we met with her several times, but we felt we were being ignored and that it was really hopeless.

Q:

And how did these various writers, like Marquis Childs, become aware of your intents and interests?

Lasker:

Well, Mrs. Mahoney was a friend of Mark Childs and she talked to him and she talked to Pierson, too. Kempton, I don't remember just what we did about him. And Florence was a friend of Doris Fleeson's, and I think maybe that both of us spoke to Doris. I don't recall exactly what we did about it, but it was certainly done as a result of our alerting them.

Q:

Were the National Health Institutes' heads elated over this 14 million dollar increase over what had been anticipated?

Lasker:

Oh, they don't express themselves one way or another. I think some of them were moderately pleased, but they're not great crusaders or zealots about the thing. Sheeley was rather please, and Dr. Van Slick would have been pleased.

The seven Institutes of the Public Health Service received 71 million 153 thousand dollars total. The Institutes, such as the National Microbiological Institute and the National Dental Institute and the National Institute of Health, were protected by the umbrella of the demand for funds which we had
