Part:         Session:         Page of 1143

Hill and other Senators heard all the witnesses in a most amiable and friendly fashion. Shortly after the hearing we met with Hill who urged Florence and me to go to see all the members of the Senate subcommittee, as he was planning to have a markup soon, and he urged us to tell them to go for the figures that the citizen witnesses had agreed on.

We went to see Thye, who was agreeable to going along with the figures that had been testified to and would try not to make any cuts whatever. I saw Chavez, who was a little whoozy but agreeable to anything Hill did. Do you remember him?

Q:

Oh, yes.

Lasker:

I saw Mangusson and Hayden. Florence saw Potter, who came over to visit us at our house. He's a Republican from Michigan who lost both legs and is sympathetic to any kind of action in the field of medicine or research. Margaret Chase Smith was in favor of total funds testified to, which were 153 million for the five Institutes of Health and a total of 180 million for the three other institutes.

So, the Senate subcommittee on appropriations went for the whole 180 million, plus two million, mostly for a new Dental Institute.

Q:

And you actually saw all these subcommittee members.

Lasker:

Oh, yes, we certainly did, and just before the markup, too.
