Lasker:

The philosophy is fear of bigness in government and fear or big taxes which will be confiscatory to people's large Fortunes, such as the duPont's, fear of Federal interference with so-called free enterprise. People have all kinds of. . .

Q:

But this is set over and against the limitation on the effectiveness of the work, isn't it, because of the limitation of funds. If it has to depend mostly on private gifts. . .

Lasker:

Yes, but most of these businessman never really understand the size of the health problem in the United States and are always more frightened by their anxieties in connection with their business than they ever are by anything, no matter what experiences they've had with illness, strangely enough.

Q:

And that was really his attitude.

Lasker:

Yes.

Q:

Just one more question about the abortive effort of the mental health organization to raise funds. Was the failure due in part perhaps to the lack of general knowledge on the part of the people in this area, from whom the support would have to come.

Lasker:

Yes, I think that's true, but also that was true in the field of cancer and heart disease and because we had better luck with getting a mechanism started for educating people and
