On the Saturday afternoon or evening, Agnes Meyer, who had rented a house in Pasadena, gave a large rally of Stevenson friends and supporters in the garden of this house which was very lively and full of enthusiasm and talk. I remember I came back with Stevenson in a car that night to the Beverly Hills Hotel, and Bill and Mike Monroney, who were maneuvering to rally the Stevenson forces, came very late that night to tell him what had happened. They had an appointment with, I think, Lawrence of Pennsylvania the next morning and also I think with somebody who represented Johnson, and I think it was the moment when there was the possibility that Johnson was going to offer to combine his forces with Stevenson's, that Sunday morning before the convention. It might have had the effect of stopping Stevenson, but as Stevenson had promised both Kennedy and Johnson that he wouldn't come out for anybody, they decided not to do it.

What role did Agnes Meyer actually play there?

Lasker:

Well, she may have supplied additional money, once she got out there, for various expenses. She certainly was the center of friends and supporters, and she was very deeply interested in the whole thing herself.

I arrived in California actually on July 3rd. I had gone to visit the Stevenson family on the 2nd. So, I was there a whole week beforehand.

On the 10th of July there was a big Democratic dinner at the Beverly Hilton, and the next day, on the 11th, a Monday,
