Sydney Janus and then about a year ago I went with Mrs. Smith and Sargent Shriver, who had bought paintings by Rothko in '51 or '52 but sold them again because his wife Eunice didn't like them, to see him. I bought another--“Shades of Red”-- painting by him which I hope to have in my new office. One of the pictures I own now by him is in the American Art Show, which maybe you'll go to see at the Metropolitan. I own two red ones, shades of red and one red and blue. And one he painted for me recently, a small one of green and blue, dark green and dark blue. I had begged him to paint for me a pale blue, sky blue and white painting, but he didn't feel for that at the moment, so he painted this other for me as a gift.

Bernard Rice again had called me about a year ago, saying that Mr. Rothko's brother was very ill, and I was very sympathetic to the seranity of his paintings and the originality of them, I thought, “Oh, my, I must do something about his brother.” Of course I called up my dear friend Dr. David Carnofsky at Memorial Hospital because the man had cancer and begged Dr. Carnofsky to do his all to help the brother. Dr. Carnofsky indeed do his all to help the brother. The brother had a very complicated surgical situation. Dr. Carnofsky got the right surgeons to do it and the man was saved and went back to his home and seemed to be doing very well.
