When I saw Rothko here recently because I'd asledhim to do a series of panels for the Kennedy Center, I asked him about his brother. He said, “Oh, he's all right, I guess.”

I said, “You don't sound very interested in him.”

He said, “No, I never really liked him.”

Well, if he'd said this earlier, the poor man might be dead because it was on his account I was making my friend doing all this work to save the brother because I thought it would distress Mr. Rothko. It shows on what strange things people's lives depend. Isn't that awful?

Well, Rothko was quite willing to do something for the Kennedy Center, to do decoration for a room, but we haven't got that settledyet due to the whimsicalities of both the architect and some of the trustees, but I'm hoping that something may still be done about it.

In any case, I think that his better paintings are very original and quite beautiful? How do you feel about him?

Q:

Well, I don't know him well enough to react I think. I think you showed one of his to me here one day.

Lasker:

Yes, a great big one. Of course they look terrible in this house because they're all out of scale and the house isn't
