Secretary of Labor, It was the Children's Bureau which was under her and was headed by Miss Lenroot. I went in to see her, dressed in black with a tri-cornered hat, as usual, and she said she didn't believe in planned parenthood, that she was a theist, whatever that is. So I left the office as fast as I could.

Q:

What is your estimate of Frances Perkins?

Lasker:

Well, in that area I didn't think she was intelligent.

Q:

What was her opposition based on?

Lasker:

God knows!

Q:

Was Katherine Lenroot more sympathetic?

Lasker:

Not really, no.

The change of the name of the Birth Control Federation seemed to me a good thing, although Mrs. Sanger opposed it. There is something about the word “birth control” that seemed to prohibit children to the average person, and this was too great a handicap for a name.

Q:

It's related to permanent sterilization, I suppose.

Lasker:

Yes.
