citations--I was the chairman of the dinner committee--to Pearl Buck, Julian Huxley, who turned out to be snowbound in Cleveland so he had to speak over a loudspeaker to us, and various others. NBC broadcast for the first time some of the speeches for half an hour; this was a great concession on the part of General Sarnoff and his people. It was done with great trepidation on the part of Sarnoff and Trammel, who was the head of the National Broadcasting Company.

Q:

were there any repercussions?

Lasker:

Oh, yes, there were complaints to the network, and everything was done with the greatest difficulty, and lack of sympathy really on the part of the people who agreed to do it.

Q:

Well, the opposition then, Mrs. Lasker, wasn't entirely the Roman Catholic. . .

Lasker:

No, it was lethargy and embarrassment and ignorance on the part of people.

Q:

And as of yet, the failure to realize the terrible urgency of this problem.

Lasker:

That's right, complete failure.
