but received no encouragement from money-raising leaders in the Party. He himself was too worried about the problems and attacks which were made on his personal business activities soon thereafter to be of any help to me on this. India Edwards was a woman of outstanding vision who believed in the health program and wanted to see it successful, including health insurance, but was unable to get a committeeorganized to do anything because of Boyle's personal difficulties. She did use Mike Gorman for nearly a year in order to do some additional work within the Democratic National Committee and we paid him out of some funds. I loaned them to the Committee under her direction.
As Congress had not yet gone into recess in early December of 1950, I paid Howard Mantell to go down to try to help Percy Priest with the Local Public Health Units bill in the hope of getting it passed by the House.
Mantell is a doctor?
No, he's a pubic relation man.
It was too late. It was prevented by the animosity and stupidity of the Board of Trustees of the AMA, who had hired Whittaker and Baxter, an incredibly energetic and able team, to prevent all action in health legislation. They did not, however, attack medical research, I guess because they thought the funds were too small.
