that he was going to hold long hearings.

Q:

That's always a stalling process.

Lasker:

Stalling, and we thought he'd stall forever and we won't get it out this year. Well, --

Q:

Holding long hearings, do they call the same witnesses?

Lasker:

They call any witnesses that they think will support their point of view. Naturally.

Well, I went again to see Staggers and he said, “Listen, if he doesn't go along I'll hold the hearings myself.”

We thought this was very brave and it comforted me slightly, and I went to Europe.

Q:

How could he do that?

Lasker:

Because he's the chairman of the full committee.

Q:

Lasker:

He could make an issue, make it a full committee matter. Well, I went to Europe and I got a cable, about the 5th of September or 8th.

Q:

You went in August as usual?

Lasker:

I went the 26th of July, I think. That Rogers was going to start hearings on the 13th or 14th of September. So I realized I had to go home. I didn't intend to go home for about two weeks, but I went home the 11th of September so I could be there and listen o the hearings.
