tied up in it now, and so the fact that McGrail was against it isn't going to help. The fact that he's still there won't help to push for more money because you know, nobody that's againstsomething is ever going to turn around completely and push for something. Butother people in the society are for it and maybe through Lane Adams who is for it we can get something done to push the members of the society.

You see, they said for a long time it was illegal. Well, I got them a legal opinion that it wasn't illegal, that it was their duty to do this.

Q:

Now that this legislation is on the books and ostensibly about to be implemented, there's no reason for downgrading the role of the American Cancer Society.

Lasker:

Oh, the Cancer Society feels very good about it now. Most people do. But when it comes down to getting in touch with the individual divisions, it will still come back to McGrail to get in touch with them, and whether he'll do anything effective in the next three years about doing that, I don't know. I still think that Dr. Garber and others will have to play a role in this.

Q:

Do you have any particular role in the Cancer Society?

Lasker:

I'm honorary chairman of the board, and also a member of the board and the executive committee, so I can go to meetings and make a plea.

Q:

Do you ever make appearances in areas, chapters, that sort of thing?
