And it's to be expected, I suppose.

This bill, however, when the President's budget was made known in January, only received 25 million dollars to get it off the ground. In other words, 25 million dollars for what are essentially, planning grants.

Q:

How many centers were anticipated at that point?

Lasker:

Well, they thought about 30, and they got about 30 requests for planning grants, good ones, approximately 30. The appropriations really ran roughly from January to the 1st of July. New the Institute for Regional Medical Centers, they're calling it -- they're shying away from the words “cancer, heart and stroke,” which is a mistake, because the intention was to attack these major diseases. cut of course the National Institutes of Health leadership, in the form of Dr. Shannon and some others, loathed having any specific if attached to anything that they re doing.

Q:

Why, does that give them greater leeway?

Lasker:

No, I think they somehow feel dubious about getting anything done about it, and they're fearful that nothing will result, and they don't want to be put on the spot to do something. They're not at all sure they can accomplish. However, I think it's a good Idea to put people on the spot, and that they should work until they
