Part:         Session:         Page of 999

Indiana, energetic and able, head of the Democratic Stúdy Group which is really a coalition of liberals in the House. John Brademas is one of the leaders of this group. Among the others are Don Frazer, Frank Thompson and Jim O'Hara. They have a few members on the full Appropriations Committee, Boland and Yates. The only way I can think of getting the appropriations on the House side more liberal and in line with the needs, is to make friends with members on the full Appropriations Committee, and see if they will fight for increases in the committee, and then get the bill on the floor. There's no hope within the sub-committee at all. The Subcommittee is totally disinterested and totally hostile.

Q:

I suppose I've asked you this before, but why are people hostile to medical research?

Lasker:

They think money is more important than life, or than preventing illness. There are some people who have a great sense of the importance of money. They don't believe in research or that there will be any results from the money. They have had no experience with illness themselves or with anybody they cared about. Maybe they don't care about anybody. These are the things I don't understand.
