I think that's sort of a summary of the different items that we have been talking about.
The most optimism that I feel is in the field of cancer research, where people interested in virology are already talking about a vaccine against leukemia by '73. They talk of the possibility of a particle or genetic element that's built into everyone, that under stress, may be triggered & can possibly cause cancer in people. Cancer, or deaths from cancer, only occur in about 16 percent of the population but about 25 percent of the population will have it at some time, so it's very widespread. At last there are many people, heads of major research institutes, Farber, R. Lee Clark, Grace at Roswell Park and Huebner at the NCI all feel cancer is conquerable. That with leads now at hand there will be many answers maybe, not just one. There are already answers to four types of cancer, as you know, but they're very minor types of cancer, except for skin cancer. There are 17 types of cancer in which 37 drugs show transient regressions, and when you get to this stage you realize that it's really money, experience, determination and making a goal of the conquest, that will finally do it. That's why, whether the President or Yarborough appoint a good commission, we could get some important action.
Well, you certainly lave laid the groundwork for that.
Well, we'll see. We'll see what happens. Such a funny, sad, continuing story!
