Q:

Earlier you were talking about the New Hampshire primary, and you mentioned that you put this thing together on Rockefeller within the context of a Republican voting in New Hampshire. Now, if you were to take positions in other primaries, in each case be within the state, therefore, you might support entirely different people who are running?

Oakes:

Yes, but we're not going to do this in every state. Remember New Hampshire was the first of the primaries. It had a great deal of interest, and it's not far from New York. It's not the same if it were Oregon or someplace. All these reasons made me feel that this would be more appropriate, whereas, for us to take a position on an Iowa primary, even a presidential primary, would be-or specifically, the Oregon primary. I'm not at all sure that we will take such a position, or any position in the Oregon primary, or the California primary.

Q:

Goldwater seems to be considerably less of a threat now, but in your discussion earlier you were talking about [inaudible]. Suppose Goldwater had shown remarkable strength in New Hampshire?

Oakes:

We would have been frightened to death, and we would have opposed him more than ever.

Q:

Your department would have been much more active, perhaps.

Oakes:

Yes, I think perhaps we would have. I think if Goldwater had won, or had shown great strength in New Hampshire, then I think that my answer to your previous question
