would have been different. We probably would be preparing right now to go in with all stops into Oregon or the California primary in order to try to stop Goldwater. Of course, these things can backfire. When a New York paper gets mixed up in politics in a different state, you're never sure whether this does more harm than good. But that situation would have been very different if Goldwater had been a serious threat.
