Oakes:

I don't have a complete list. No, no, by trot - all I have is, I've made some penciled notations, not long ago, in looking through this thing again. But I don't have any official list at all.

Q:

But you think there are instances where initials were changed, so that the same person lives under several different initials?

Oakes:

On a couple of initials, in some cases, yes.

Q:

That's important to know.

Oakes:

Yes. That certainly was true in some cases, yes. I think that actually by going back, I'm sorry I forgot to bring - by checking my own copy of the book, where I've made penciled notations, I may be able to throw a little more light on this, than I have been able to.

Q:

Good. There are parts in there where it seems that he is actually able to achieve some opening up, and some -

Oakes:

Oh, yes, he thought that I had improved a good deal in opening up. He thought I was terribly defensive, and I have no doubt that that's true, that I probably was and probably am terribly defensive about my department, and felt that it wasn't properly considered or treated by the other areas of the paper. I suspect that that's true. And he congratulated me at the end on having made very considerable efforts to open up, and so
