Q:

I just wanted to start by asking you about an article that actually wasn't on the editorial page but appeared in the daily newspaper, June 4th, 1955, “Partisan Feeling Running High on the Colorado River Project.”

Oakes:

Oh, is that the Dinosaur --

Q:

The Echo Park Dam, yes.

Oakes:

The Echo Park Dam? My goodness.

Q:

Why did that piece appear in the daily paper? And could you tell me a little bit about the impact of the story?

Oakes:

Well, I was -- at that time, I was writing editorials -- I was on the editorial board of the Times, writing editorials on mainly political and other subjects. What was the year of that?

Q:

1955.

Oakes:

'55. That's right in the middle of the ten years that I also was writing but only once a month, a column --

Q:

Oh, yes. Tell me about that.

Oakes:

-- a column titled “Conservation,” as a matter of fact. I started that column I think in 1951, a couple of years after I joined the editorial staff of the Times. I think I went on the
