No, I never visited Sadat. No. I went out to the Middle East, was it --

In '77 I think.

Oakes:

-- in '77? At this point I do not recall the exact year. I made several trips at different periods. One visit, I think the period you're talking about -- In 1972, I made a trip to Egypt and Israel and that area. But I never actually met or talked to Sadat. No.

Q:

Sorry. I had that wrong.

Oakes:

The only one of the major Arab leaders I talked to was Saddam [Hussein], in Syria. I had a long conversation with him but that was not --

Q:

That was not that time period.

Oakes:

That was not that trip, no. No, that was later. I could easily get the date of that, but I went to Jordan and then went up to Syria. But what was the --?

Q:

My question was, what was your view of what happened to Carter, in essence? What happened to his presidency, and why he lost? And did it have in part to do with his Middle East politics?

Oakes:

Because of the hostage business?

Q:

Yes.
