and of belonging to a locality than I was of belonging to the USA, which perhaps is wrong and unpatriotic, but I honestly believe that that's the way that people develop. You become responsible for a small area that you can see. You gradually know the rest.
I remember saying, “All I know is this. When the Republicans are in power in this state, we don't get any social legislation at all. The bills and the things I'm interested in make no progress at all. When the Democrats are in power, we make some progress. We get some bills through. He get attention. I believe I would vote the Democratic ticket on those grounds.”
“You'd vote for Tammany?”
“They vote for our legislation.” It was as naive as that.
It was probably a few years before women had the vote that I had in my own mind the conviction that I would vote Democratic if we had the vote, on that account and that only. I didn't carry it much further. I didn't know about political principles and so forth.
In New England, of course, the free trade elements of the Democratic party platform had always been a matter of debate, because the seafaring people, the shipping people,
