man from Painted Post, who was a considerable factor at that time. He was a kind of philosophical farmerish type. He was a good Republican, but he was not the prejudiced Republican. There was another man, also, whose name I can't remember who was “Mr. Republican.” Both of these Republicans said to me, “You know, it's a wicked thing we've done. It's terrible because this man, Sulzer, has only done what everybody else in the party has done (I wasn't a Republican or Democrat then), but we must vote for it because we certainly can't be on record as condoning graft and corruption in which he is already engaged.”
They were right. You couldn't. The whole community was shocked at what was being done. That explains the Republican vote, although Republicans thought it was a dirty thing that had been done by the Tammany Democrats.
My memory should be checked, but I think there was one Democrat that didn't vote for his impeachment and that was Henry Grady, the great orator. I think he made a speech. He was, of course, quite drunk. He always tanked up before he made a speech I guess he could have made a speech without it, but he was more eloquent when he had liquor in him. He was an amazingly picturesque person. We don't breed them like him any more. My memory of Crady was that they had nothing
