Sam Jones. Men commonly go to court to have their names changed, but that is only to make a public announcement. There is no necessity. You can change your name and tell people that you have changed your name and that exists as your legal name. Of course there mustn't be an attempt to defraud, evade responsibility of evade your personality.
Thus the name under which I am commonly known is my legal name. I do have two names thought, although I never use the Wilson name for any professional or legal purposes. The Mutual Benefit of New Jersey finally said all right, so it was the first feather for all the women who wanted to do it.
The next big contest came when I was appointed to the New York State Industrial Board by Al Smith. In making out the papers of appointment, al Smith's Attorney General said, “Look here, this woman is married. Her name is Wilson.” The papers had all been drawn up in the name of Fences Perkins. It had been announced to he world and they were running the appointment through to the Senate for confirmation. The Attorney General said it had to be Frances Perkins Wilson.
Al called me up himself on the telephone. The Attorney General was right there. I spouted this bit of learning that I've just recorded. I can't think who the Attorney General was, but he was very upset and very doubtful.
