a sound argument. He won the argument, but he won it the hard way. It certainly broke his heart and his political life was marred by it. His heart was so broken both by that and by the general opprobrium which they visited on him and his defeat in the election of 1917 that he went off and insisted on getting into the army. Of course they gave him an air force commission when he was far too old for it. It was really terrible. A brilliant career was finished off before it was over. He was good for many years. He would have ripened with life. He should have been Governor of New York. He should have been a Senator. He should have been various things. He had a very great future and he would have been a tower of strength.
I knew Mrs. Mitchel - Olive - not awfully well, but somewhat. She was nice girl with very commonplace attitudes toward life. She was very pretty, very good looking, very chic, very stylish. Her attitudes towards life, however, were commonplace. They were complacent. She wanted a good income. She enjoyed what money bought. She was not interested in politics. That was one of the tragic things. She was just not interested at all. She wasn't interested in his being Mayor. She wasn't interested in the problems of the city. It was all they could do to get her to come out and sit on the platform and look pretty.
