the fact that I had no ambition to be some body in the world. My going into this particular kind of work was in a sense a vocation. It never occurred to me that there was a top in it, or a top to arrive at. I honestly didn't think about it.
When I say my marriage made a difference, it did, because I was only interested in getting these particular things done. I had not had that dreadful sense of ambition that I had to go ahead with my career. I never had heard the word career and I didn't know that I had one. Literally I was completely innocent of anything like that. But marrying did make a difference. I didn't, by any means, intend to, nor did I, drop the projects upon which I was engaged, nor would my husband have tolerated it. He would have thought that it would have been terrible. He was interested in them too. We were right in the middle of the legislative program. But it made a difference in my way of life and in my varied occupations and in the time I had at my disposal.
Instead of living in a little flat with no special responsibilities, I had moved into a house and had to take on two to three servants. While it was not a great establishment, it was a kind of an establishment. I had to assume responsibility for entertaining, which you don't do when you're a so-called “bachelor girl.” You don't have any of
