Anyhow I talked them in to the ides that there wasn't any story and they went home. Not a word appeared in the papers because there wasn't any story. I took great pains to see that there wasn't any story. I didn't argue with them. They asked me about somebody or other else who'd kept their maiden name, and I didn't know about that person. I didn't know whether I approved or not. I hadn't given it any thought. I've always been amused at myself.
The professional end of things was, of course, very hot right then, because we were in the midst of the completing of the factory legislation and of the recommendations. That was just the time that the proprietors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company were brought to trial. As a matter of fact, this is interesting as color of what life was like in those days.
