If I have a conference at my house now, I don't want my daughter around and being nice, or anybody. The people who are invited to confer who have some responsibility are the ones who confer and outsiders are not welcome. That's why you go off and have it in a private place instead of having it down in city Hall where everybody knows what you're doing.

But it was interesting. Occasionally someone would stay and air his mind. A particularly irate one would air his mind. Arthur Woods was a lovely person, but he used to get very irate. He was a perfectly wonderful Police Commissioner. He had the finest of ideas. He was particularly offended at the attitudes of some of the politicians who used to approach him about particular pests who got in trouble with his police and one thing or another. If the Mayor, William A. Prendergast or anybody thought he ought to listen to these people, he was irate. It was in a good cause. He was nearly always right. He used to sometimes stay and blow off. It did no harm. He always performed beautifully and was truly loyal and truly devoted to the Mayor.

Then, of course, there was Frank Polk who was Corporation Counsel. He got shot. I remember that when it was all over I heard about it. It might just as well have been Paul. Frank was standing right next to Paul. It was pure accident which one was hit by this bullet. It was aimed at the Mayor,
