own health and for his own personal welfare. He was emotional and yet he'd been brought up in the school that thought you should keep your emotions under cover. If ever I saw anybody repress his emotions, it was Mitchel. He was a terrific repressor. He wanted to hit the ceiling. He wanted to be dramatic. He wanted to be Irish. But the Mitchel in him was strong too and he kept it down. He had a great sense of propriety. I think he was half north of Ireland; grandfathers on both sides were Irish patriots. One of them was Irish and Catholic, the other was North Ireland and Protestant - but they were both patriots. They both had bled in the '48 riots. They were both Charles Parnell men. The Mayor was never sentimental about it. If he had been a little more sentimental about Ireland, he could have had the heart of Tammany, because the heart of Tammany was devoted to Ireland in those days. But he would not be sentimental. Tammany was always impressed by the fact that his grandfathers were Irish patriots. It was brought forward as one of the reasons for his being a candidate. They were well-disposed toward him, but he wouldn't sit down and be sentimental with them about it.
