I wasn't disturbed, because I didn't think of Read as of any consequence, but I was surprised at this attitude. In those days nothing upset us. We didn't get upset about anybody's ideology. Anybody was entitled to have any ideology which he wanted to. It was all interesting. The world was secure and safe and there was plenty for everybody. That was the general attitude. You didn't get upset because people had funny ideas. You expected them to have funny ideas. That was America. Everybody had a new idea every little while. Reed appeared like that. I remember that Reed was very expressive.
There was a big unemployment crisis shortly after Mitchel became Mayor. It was very intense in New York. It was the first time that anybody had paid any attention to unemployment. When I say anybody, I mean any public official group. The Mitchel administration was full of people who had a social work experience. Even Bruere had worked in a settlement in Boston. It was full enough of that type of people so that when there were people out of work, with no work for them, no place to go and nothing to eat, a sense of obligation came over them.
