they could. But we weathered that storm.
Mrs. Hearst took charge. We went and made our official call upon her. She was very nice, pleasant and agreeable and had absolutely no idea of what to do -not any. She told us that Mr. Hearst had arranged to have some man in the newspaper business take over everything. He would plan everything. Immediately there began to be releases in the paper saying what Mrs. Hearst's Council was doing and what Mrs. Hearst's Council would do. They brought in a lot of the darndest organizations that we had never heard of -Ladies of the Order of the Something-or-Other. There were all kinds of funny organizations, which I guess had more membership all told, but were strictly not the kind that had ever done any service or had ever done anything.
A great many of these organizations including this Lafayette committee continued to do the work that they could do. They utilized, and I made it available to them, some of the expert technical groups of volunteers that we had. But we passed out of the picture. When I say we I mean Miss Morgan, Mrs. Willard Straight, myself, Mrs. Rumsey, Mrs. Belle Moskowitz, Miss Mary Richmond, and people like that. We passed out of the picture.
