Then something was said on the other side.

Then I heard him say, “Yeah, you got to go back to Janet.”

You could almost hear, and you could guess that on the other end he was saying, “She wouldn't take me back.”

Al said, “Jimmy, that's all right. I've had a talk with Janet, Janet will take you back. She believes in the party. She's a good Tammany Hall girl. She's not going to get in the way of the party. Janet will take you back if you behave yourself. I fixed that with Janet. All you've got to do is to call her up and make your peace with her. She'll be all right. I've talked with her and that's all arranged. She thinks you're a good man to be mayor and she wants the party to come out well. She's a good Tammany Hall girl.”

There was conversation back and forth.

“I'll tell you what, Jimmy. You've got to be seen next Sunday morning (this was about Friday) coming out of St. Joseph's Church with Janet on your arm after the eleven o'clock mass. We'll have photographers there. We can't even talk about you as a candidate for mayor until you're seen coming out of St. Joseph's Church with Janet on your arm.”

You could hear Jimmy say, “That's an awful dose. I
